For the Love of the Land: Poetry & Photography Lovework

Past event
Jun 30, 2018, 12 to 2 PM

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

"Loveworks" are volunteer community service activities curated by the Clemmons Family Farm for residents of Charlotte, Shelburne, Hinesburg, South Burlington, Burlington and Winooski to learn about, celebrate and commune around African-American heritage, art, and each other as members of a loving and supportive multicultural community.

Our "For the Love of the Land: Poetry & Photography" lovework focuses on the creative exploration of a magic meadow secreted away on the west side of the Clemmons Family Farm, the joy of open spaces, and the implications of the dramatic loss of African-American land assets over the past century. The community poetry and photography that will be created and shared as outputs of this exploration is a part of preserving the family land, history and heritage of the Clemmons Family Farm within the context of African-American land ownership.

A family story footnote: poetry and photography are some of our favorite art forms! Jack learned to love photography during the 1920's when he was shining shoes at his parents' hat and laundry shop, which happened to be just down the road from the famous Milwaukee Journal Newspaper. Many of the journalists liked to stop by the shop every week. They showed young Jack their cameras, film and photographs while he shined their shoes. While you check out the "For the Love of the Land" lovework opportunity on eventbrite, you can listen to one of Jack's storytelling pieces, "Hats, Laundry and Photography" (Part 1) here: https://youtu.be/-dLdcL-SF8I

With love from,

Lydia, Lydia and Jack
