Towle and Clayton Share Shelburne IGA Memories

Past event

From 1851 to 1968, the brick building at the corner of Route 7 and Harbor Road in Shelburne Village was the area's center for shopping, everything from groceries to a fishing rod or a Beatles '45.
Linda Towle's father Charlie Towle owned the store from April 30, 1948 with his partner Al Doenges, and with Harry Clayton from 1963 until 1968 when they moved the grocery store to Shelburne Shopping Park where it stands today.
Linda has many happy memories of growing up in Shelburne in the '50's and '60's, and has gathered memories, stories, photographs, and even account books from the old store. On Monday, June 18 at 6:30 in the Historic Town Hall, Linda, who now lives in Colorado, will give an illustrated presentation about the iconic business. She will be joined in her story-telling by Harry Clayton's son Kevin, who for the last 15 years has been operating his popular Village Wine & Coffee business in the original grocery store building. And as a special addition to the historical program, Kevin will lead a tour of the newly renovated half of his building where he is expanding his wine and coffee shop.
The program is sponsored by Shelburne Historical Society. Admission is free (good will donations gratefully accepted) and everyone is welcome to attend. It will be a great chance to share your memories. If you have any pictures of the old store (inside or out) or memories of shopping in the store, please contact LTowle@Q.com or dfpenar@comcast.net
