Mary Claire Carroll and Julie McGowan would like to invite you to the Luminous Landscapes of Vermont show, held at the Emile A. Gruppe Gallery from 7 June through 15 July. There will be an artists' reception Friday, 8 June, from 5-7:30 pm and an Artist's Talk on Sunday, 24 June, from 1-2:30 pm, entitled Hudson River School and Me. The Emile A. Gruppe Gallery is located at 22 Barber Farm Road, Jericho, VT and is open from 10:00 am – 3 pm Thursday through Sunday and by appointment.

Three years ago, Julie J. McGowan, academically trained in Renaissance portraiture, was in her early second career as a Vermont Luminist Landscape painter, and Mary Claire Carroll was a well-established portrait and social interest photographer, both living in Richmond. Their friendship led to the genesis of an idea to select areas around Northern Vermont that offered both a visually transformative vision and an atmosphere that lent itself to luminosity in both photography and painting.

Mary Claire used a variety of cameras and lenses to capture the beauty of the scene. Returning to her studio, she enhanced the images without loosing the essence of the place. Julie used traditional Nineteenth Century materials and techniques, including a grisaille underpainting, a limited oil palette, and multiple layers of glazing to add transparent color and infuse her works with the core precepts of Luminism to represent each of selected locations. The works in this exhibit represent the culmination of their three-year project.

We would be honored if you would attend the opening reception and if you are not available on the 8th, please visit the show at another time. We look forward having you view our work.

Sincerely,

Mary Claire and Julie
