Mountain River School Open House- Friday June 1st
For Interested Families-

The Mountain River School is an Independent Non-Profit (501(c)3) school located in Stowe, VT, entering its fourth year. We are a vibrant place-based school, guiding students on their journeys toward lifelong learning, community stewardship and wellness. We aim to educate the whole child by integrating academic engagement and character development through a curriculum driven by our place and community. We use authentic project-based learning to hone investigation, collaboration and problem-solving skills. The projects provide students agency and voice that inspires them to invest in their own learning.

The school offers a creative and vibrant learning community in which students feel comfortable taking intellectual risks, participating in conflict resolution and practicing their leadership skills. Because of small class sizes, students receive individual attention from their teachers and are encouraged to learn at their own pace. Students become active participants as they explore their world, ask and answer their own questions, and express unique thoughts and ideas.

About Mountain River School

Mountain River School is pioneering place-based education in Lamoille County, Vermont. Our unique alternative educational model offers opportunities for children to learn in a nurturing, learner-centered environment focused on foundational curriculum that offers students both choice and voice in their education.

By honoring each child's passion for learning, inspiring curiosity and empowering students, the Mountain River School approach fills a unique niche in Vermont. Daily mindfulness practices and a commitment to every child's social, emotional and spiritual needs cultivate and deepen self-awareness, relationships and connection to community. In 2017 we partnered with the Teacher Learning Center of Teton Science Schools (TSS) out of Jackson, Wyoming. This partnership was pursued to help strengthen our educational approach and growth, as well as accelerate the development of our innovative school model. The Teacher Learning Center offers consulting and professional development services to help schools and districts deeply integrate learning with local places to increase student engagement, student learning outcomes, and community impact. The place-based approach will build upon the nature-connected curriculum that already exists at MRS to provide systems around curriculum, instruction, and assessment to solidify the existing learner-centered experience as the school continues to grow.

What Makes Mountain River School Unique?
Place-Based Education
Arts Integration: Students explore how to express themselves and understand their world through art and integrating it throughout all subject matter.

Individualized Learning: Embracing each child's unique pace and approach to learning. Our dynamic and highly engaged educators have smaller classroom sizes and understand how to identify and meet each child where he/she is at, and tailor their educational experience.

MRS Domains of Learning: Seeking to honor and nourish the whole child throughout the learning process.

Health & Wellness Integration: Prioritizing time to learn within ourselves, the community, and the natural world.

Additional collaborations:
This year, we are excited to be developing collaborations with two local organizations (The Market Garden School and Mud City Adventures) in an ongoing effort to enrich our curriculum and expand our student experience. These local partnerships will support our mission to cultivate environmental stewards and engaged citizens, through continued exploration of our natural world and interconnectedness.

At MRS, we believe in the vital importance of establishing a connection with and appreciation of our natural world. MRS students are regularly provided with opportunities to strengthen their outdoor intelligence, through planned expeditions (such as our Winter and Spring Thursdays, which offer skiing, snowshoeing, biking and hiking), and through ample outdoor exploration time, both guided and free.

Parents, if you are interested in attending our open house on Friday June 1st at 8:30 or visiting the school and seeing classes in action, please contact us at admissions@mountainriverschool.org
