The Dixieland Music of Mardi Gras

The “Kingdom Dixie Jazz Band” , the well-known group of local Northeast Kingdom musicians playing old time Dixieland Jazz music will come to the Now Playing Newport Music Sries at St. Mark's Church, 44 Second St. on Sunday, March 9th at 4 pm. The songs once heard along the Mississippi River during the early years of the 20th Century. Their song list includes the foot tapping rhythms of Sensation Rag, Fidgety Feet, Panama Rag and the slow blues sound of Wabash Blues or Tin Roof Blues. Also the old standards of the “Dixie” era such as Basin Street Blues, Muskrat Ramble, Milenberg Joys and many others. The “Kingdom Dixie’s” feature a full rhythm section of Tuba, Guitar and Drum set. The horn section comprises of Trumpet, Clarinet, Trombone and Tenor Sax.

The musicians of the “Kingdom Dixie Jazz Band” live in the Newport/Derby area. Members hold regular day jobs such as educators, businessmen, health services, school bus drivers, or retired. They are also members of the “Newport Area Band” that provides Thursday night Concerts at the Band Stand in Gardner Park, Newport and the “NEK Wind Symphony” that performs two public concerts during the winter. The Goal of the “Kingdom Dixie Jazz” Band is to provide musical entertainment for various public festivals in and around Newport/Derby to enhance the cultural opportunities for the people living and visiting the Northeast Kingdom.
