Construction of the new playground at Union Elementary School will begin this summer. Next week the VT Dept. of Environmental Conservation will be holding a public information hearing about the plan to remove or cap contaminated soils on the site-- detailed information is below. There will be additional public meetings about the construction process and local impacts beginning in June. Keep an eye on FPF and other local sources for information to come.
From the DEC: The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recently reviewed the draft Corrective Action Plan for the removal and capping of soils impacted by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at the Montpelier Union Elementary School. These soils will be encountered during playground reconstruction, building renovations, and other site construction. The draft Corrective Action Plan can be viewed on the Environmental Notice Bulletin at https://enb.vermont.gov/ or by contacting the DEC Project Manager. The Vermont DEC has determined that the Corrective Action Plan adequately addresses the contaminated soils and meets the requirements of the July 2017 Investigation and Remediation of Contaminated Properties Rule (IRULE).
A 30-day public comment period regarding the Corrective Action Plan began on May 7 and will continue through June 6, 2018. During the first 14 days of the public comment period, the public may call for an informational meeting regarding the Corrective Action Plan. The applicant, the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission, has requested a public informational meeting and the details are below.
