This half-day course is geared toward the outdoor enthusiast and backcountry traveler; be you a hunter, wildcrafter/gatherer/forager, backpacker, trail-runner, mountain-biker, dog-walker, nature photographer - the benefits of this dynamic course are transferable across a wide-range of practices and activities.
Today, many of us have become adapted to a more sedentary lifestyle, protected from much of the adversity and risk our ancestors experienced daily. From our engineered footwear and our sterilized diet, to the climate-controlled, homogeneous environments we inhabit, our quality of life and understanding of how to inhabit Earth is suffering. We must begin by acknowledging the effects of such a comparatively luxurious lifestyle in our mental, physical, emotional, and societal health, and begin to reclaim the vitality and resilience we've inherited from our ancestors.
Throughout the day, we'll explore topics such as natural movement patterns and self-defense (beyond the purely physical "martial art" forms), situational awareness in both an urban and wilderness context, reading the forested landscape, wilderness safety and navigation, and foraging/wild plant identification. We will mix informative presentations with experiential learning, movement and exploration, aiming to send participants home well-equipped to engage with their landscapes as intentional and active participants.
Come hungry to learn and dig deep into your roots; leave full of practical knowledge on deepening your connection to your local ecology.
