The Friends of the Plainfield Opera House are pleased to announce the final performance in its 2018 Concert Series: Gamelan Sulukala — Original and Traditional Music for Javanese Gamelan Orchestra.

Plainfield's own community gamelan will present a concert at the Opera House on Sunday, May 13 at 4pm. The concert will include traditional Javanese pieces as well as compositions by American gamelan masters Dennis Murphy and Barbara Benary, plus premiers of pieces written by current members–including one piece in 5/4 and another based on a hand-weaving pattern.

Gamelan has a long history in central Vermont going back to the late 1960's when Dennis Murphy built the first gamelan anywhere in the world outside of Java at Goddard College. Javanese Gamelan is a group — or orchestra — of about 30 instruments ranging from huge gongs to tiny flutes with lots of xylophone and kettle type instruments in between. Gamelan Sulukala is a full court-style complement of instruments made in Java and fashioned from bronze and iron.

Tickets are available at the door or in advance through catamountix.org. General admission $15, Seniors $10, Students and Special rate $5.
