We invite you to join your friends and neighbors by taking time out to read, write and reflect on our natural landscape, and allow it to inspire you to create your own imaginative poems. We'll begin by reading a selection of poems by well-known poets. Then, armed with suggestions from Angela, participants will disperse to look, listen and record their observations and reflections. After a period of time alone, we will come back together to talk about how we might turn our first impressions into finished poems we might want to share.

Workshop leader bio: Angela Patten is author of three poetry collections, In Praise of Usefulness (Wind Ridge Books, Vermont), Reliquaries and Still Listening, both from Salmon Poetry, Ireland, and a prose memoir, High Tea at a Low Table(Wind Ridge Books, Vermont). Her work has been published in a wide variety of literary journals and anthologies. Winner of the 2016 National Poetry Prize from the Cape Cod Cultural Center, she has also received creation grants from the Vermont Community Foundation and the Vermont Arts Council. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, she now lives in Burlington, Vermont, where she teaches creative writing and literature at the University of Vermont.

Community Naturalist Series: Creative Exploration of Burlington's Natural Landscapes

This three-part series of creative workshops is inspired by and focused on Burlington's natural landscapes. All workshops are open to the general public but require pre-registration. Sign up for just one, or all three! Workshops will teach different ways to celebrate place through art. Workshop participants will be encouraged to use what they learn to produce a piece of artwork or writing to exhibit at a community art show at the South End Art Hop in September.

The other two workshops in the series are:

1. Watercolor Workshop with Katherine Monstream
June 3rd: 10:00- 11:30 am at the Shelter at NorthBeach

2. Drawing In Place with Lauren Sopher
June 23: 9:30-11:30 am at Arms Forest with a meeting at Burlington High School
