GREEN-UP POWNAL … SATURDAY, MAY 5TH between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM (Rain or Shine!)
Working with Tom Shuey, the town's Green-Up Day coordinator, Pownal Proud seeks to bring new energy to this important annual event. Green-Up Day carries on the Vermont tradition when volunteers from around the state rally to remove litter from roadsides and public spaces in their towns. We hope that individuals and families will share in the fun and pride of making a difference in Pownal.
There are several ways that you can be involved …
1. Plan to join one of the already established clean-up teams that will meet in the following locations at 9:00 a.m.:
Ladd/Brookman Road Team … meet at the corner of Ladd and Brookman Road.
Cedar Hill/Quarry Hill Team … meet at Harwood Harvest Farm on Cedar Hill Road.
Skiparee Road Team … meet at Country Auto … corner of Skiparee and North Pownal Roads.
Carpenter Hill Road Team … meet at corner of Carpenter Hill and North Pownal Roads.
2. Come to the American Legion outdoor pavilion any time between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. to pick up green trash bags (and gloves for those who need them) and head off to the road of your choice for clean-up. Keep track of the number of bags you fill and either leave bags at the roadside or bring them to the dumpster at the Pavillion donated by TAM for the Green-Up effort. In either case, return to the pavilion to report what you have collected.
3. If Saturday is not convenient for you and you would like to collect trash along your favorite Pownal roads earlier in the week, you can get Green-Up bags from the Town Office, or from Tom Shuey at the Transfer Station on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday of the previous week. You can bring those bags to the Transfer Station during regular hours or bring them to the pavilion on Saturday, the 5th. In either case, Tom will need to know how many bags you collected.
At the American Legion Pavilion on Saturday, coffee, donuts and water will be available during the morning, and a hot-dog luncheon will be served from 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for all who participate in the Green-Up effort.
Those participating should plan to wear appropriate mud-friendly footwear, long pants and shirts with sleeves. Be tick- smart both in what you wear and in checking yourself (and your kids) for ticks afterwards.
Note: For safety reasons, volunteers should not plan to pick up along Rte 7 or Rte 346; VTrans workers will take care of those areas. Green-Up Day volunteers should concentrate their efforts on other town roads.
Many hands make for light work. Our collective effort on Green-Up Day will help to preserve and protect the natural beauty that is one of Pownal's greatest assets.
Kids … Look for brightly painted Tiny Houses on the sides of roads around town. Bring a tiny house and your green litter bags to Tom Shuey at the American Legion to claim your prize! (Parents … please take pictures and send them to megan.randall2@gmail.com.) Thank you for caring about our community!
