The Bhutanese Kirat Rai Yayokha community of Vermont invites you to celebrate Ubhauli Sakela!
April 28th, 11am-3pm at Battery Park
Ubhauli Sakela is the largest and most significant festival (puja) celebrated by the Bhutanese Nepali Kirat Rai Yayokha people. The Sakela celebration is a prayer to mother nature forhealthy crops and protection from natural calamities.
Sakela is celebratated twice a year--on the day of the full moon-once at the beginning of the agricultural season, and once during harvest. The main activity during this festival is a dance performed in a large circle, with traditional attire and culturally significant objects (such as drums, yak hair, and palms). Dancers from Vermont and several other states will perform the Sakela dance throughout the event.
Nepali food will be available and free to all. This year marks the 1st Sakela ever celebrated in Vermont!
