The title of this documentary refers to the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution, which reads, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States… ” The progression from that second qualifying clause to the current rate of mass criminalization and the state of the American prison industry is thoroughly laid out in this film. The film screening will be followed by a panel with representatives from Black Lives Matter Greater Burlington, Peace & Justice Center, Vermont Commons School staff, and more.
