Event: Climate Change Presentation
Friday April 20, 2018, 6:45 PM Sterling College
A "Must-See" Visual Presentation of Current Climate Degradation
In recognition of Earth Day, Sterling College, Craftsbury Energy Committee and WonderArts will host Michael Billingsley with a presentation on climate change, including the most recent "Cyclone Bomb" storms this past 2018 winter. Using satellite data visualisations, weather radar images and other technologies through NOAA, National Weather Service, and others, one aspect of Michael's presentation shows the wind direction, precipitation, air temperature and wind speed/gusts of these storms off the Atlantic and how they affected the melting of Greenland and the rest of the Arctic region.
The presentation will take place Friday, April 20th, 6:45 PM, Simpson Hall, Sterling College, Craftsbury Common.
One big road block for getting current information from climate scientists on the rapidly changing climate is that publishing data takes an average of 10 years to research, peer review and publish the info. Michael's information is taken from publicly available sources and shows what is happening in real time.
Come and see how the rapidly-warming Arctic oceans, melting Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, and other big effects such as the warming of Russian and Alaskan permafrost tundra, are shifting ocean currents, affecting our health and changing our weather. These somewhat unpredictable changes have never occurred before in known human history.
For the past several years Michael has been studying rapidly warming conditions in the Arctic polar region and monitoring the effect upon North American, European and Russian weather. He works informally with (and has presented for) Vermont Emergency Management and FEMA about flooding risks and community response. He is the Emergency Management Director for the town of Plainfield VT and helps lead that town's Hazard Mitigation Committee.
The CEC will also be hosting a presentation on 5/16 by Efficiency Vt. on home weatherization. Come and see how folks in the NEK can get a Home Energy Audit for $150 by HEAT SQUAD. For more information, or to be on their presentation notification list, contact CraftsburyEnergyCommittee@gmail.com
