Our Friday evening presentation at the Steele Community Center at the Waterbury Town Offices will introduce you to the variety of habitats around the Waterbury Reservoir and the diversity of bird species found there throughout the year. Find out why this site is considered a birding hot spot by the eBird community and how you can fine-tune your skills to make the most of every season. We'll also discuss how to become better stewards of this unique community, creating healthy habitats that are good for people, birds, and water quality.
On Saturday morning, we'll adventure out on Waterbury Reservoir by canoe & kayak to tour the water body discovering both resident birds and spring migrants. The surrounding area boasts close to 100 species of birds, including bitterns, grebes, bald eagles, loons, wood ducks and a whole suite of wood warblers! With a number of small coves and wetlands edging the reservoir, we're sure to encounter a great diversity of species. Experience the serenity of birding on the water, while boosting your bird list this spring!
Our paddling session will also cover how to be a great waterway steward, including learning to read bird body language to limit disruption and stress on birds like the common loon and others.
Ticket sales benefit the Friends of Waterbury Reservoir. We welcome your optional donation at check-out to support our mission.
Thank to our event sponsors Green Mountain Power for sponsoring this event with a generous cash gift, and Umiak Outfitters for donating the proceeds of boat rentals. And thank you to our volunteers who make it all possible!
