Our daughter, McKinley James is studying classical Cello at New England Conservatory. Although she has been playing a lot of wild folk music with her band, she wanted to celebrate Bach this spring. Her idea was to take the classic Bach Suites, the most familiar cello music of all time, and break them apart, so we really can HEAR them in a new way.
Bach wrote six suites, each with six dance movements. The three cellists will play three of them, but change who is playing each movement, so the sound, style and tone changes as the music passes around the room. It sounds like a lot of math, but what it will be is gloriously transformative music, in part, because McKinley got two such amazing cellists to join her: Benjamin Fryxell who went to Julliard and now is getting his Master's at NEC, and Ari Friedman, who got her Master's at NEC a few years ago, and is now performing both classical and fiddle cello.
If you would like to join us, send me a note for the invitation! It's on Friday April 13th, with a community potluck at 6, and the music starts at 7.
