We've mentioned this a time or two before but figure one last reminder won't hurt. A public forum is being held at U-32 room 128/130 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday 26 March to brainstorm our way through questions and problems surrounding a change in U-32 and elementary school hours.
The basic idea is to start U-32 later and elementary schools earlier so that the school day is better aligned with students' body clocks. The forum will feature a brief overview of the science behind the initiative, along with opportunities for participants to register their questions, concerns, hopes, ideas, etc. It's the first of several occasions that will, we believe, lead to a plan we can implement in the 2019-20 school year.
Although it might seem like a ho-hum affair, other schools that tried this have run up against objections ranging from scheduling of buses and athletic events to parental needs for older students to look after younger siblings. A number of years ago U-32 took tentative steps in this direction and backed off in the face of stiff opposition.
A change in school hours could offer interesting possibilities for broader student participation in programs that expand and enrich the academic experience. It could also allow us to unlock some of the potential for our schools to return additional value to the communities that pay for them.
All are welcome to attend, whether or not you have children in the school system. Anything to do with our schools concerns all of us.
