Fire District #2 Annual Meeting

Past event
Jan 27, 2014

For those of you who no longer receive copies of The Colchester Sun, I did pick up a copy yesterday at the Town Hall and found a notice warning that Fire District #2 will be holding their annual meeting on Monday, January 27th, 2014 to be held at the Water Department located at 838 Church Road (located behind the fire department building). As I left the Town Hall, I did notice a few signs posted along the curb regarding said meeting - and that was the extend of the notices for residents regarding their annual meeting. I was also surprised to read that whatever is discussed on the 27th will then be voted on by Australian ballot on the 28th. I have lived at my present location for over 19 years and this is the first time I have been made aware that Fire District #2 holds Australian ballots for district voters. They claim that last year's annual meeting resulted in residents voting 'yes' for the "readiness to serve" monthly charge of $3.00. I was not aware that any voting took place by the residents yet their minutes claim such happened so we were informed of their monthly $3 increase for their "readiness to serve" charge. Which I have refused to pay so they are now penalizing me at a monthly rate of 15%. Our water bills state "Penalties: All bills for 'metered water' are rendered every three months and are payable within 30 days. A 15% late charge will be added after 30 days." I have been paying my 'metered water' charge faithfully yet they insist upon penalizing me for not paying the ridiculous charge they refer to as a "readiness to serve" charge. Do the other water districts pay such a charge?

Aside from the above, our most recent bill informs us that due to increased fees from their wholesaler and suppliers, a rate increase becomes effective April 21, 2014.

The question to be considered by voters on 1/28 is whether The Prudential Committee be authorized to borrow or bond a sum of money to refurbish and make purchases for the Malletts Bay Fire Department ... such to be paid off over a term of 10 years. That means that cost will be added to our water bills. So in less than a year's time, Fire District #2 has tacked an additional $3/mo. cost on our water bills, will be increasing our rates come April, and are now requesting approval by the residents/ voters to add more cost to our bills by taking out a loan or bond.

Please residents of Fire District #2, attend the January 27th annual meeting so that we can learn what is going on - and then make a knowledgeable decision on the 28th when casting our votes. I think it is time for Colchester to become a 'real town' rather than a town with sub-municipalities allowed to make their own rules and do whatever they believe is best for the greater good. Enough with ALL these increases reigning down on us from the state, the town, and now the municipality!
