Young Traditions Vermont Touring Group will be performing traditional Acadian/Celtic music at Middelbury's Town Hall Theater on Saturday, March 24th at 7 pm. The group will be touring in Scotland this April and has been performing concerts around the state as it raises funds for the trip.
The Young Tradition Touring Group are teen players, singers and dancers who focus on learning and performing traditional music and dance repertoire over the course of a 8-month, late September through early May session, most often culminating in an April performance tour. Group members learn from and are supported by guest musicians and dancers/dance leaders, in addition to musical exchanges with young musicians and dancers while on performance tours. Touring Groups have traveled to Cape Breton, Northumberland in England and Scotland, and the West Coast of Ireland.
In general, "traditional" means songs, dances and other material that is primarily transmitted orally, and from unknown composers and creators. It is material that most often evolves through a process of oral transmission and most often performed by a particular cultural group over a long period of time.
The group is supported by artist leaders Pete Sutherland, Dominique Dodge and Andrea Beaton, youth leaders Rose Jackson and Oliver Scanlon, and manager Mark Sustic, the 2017/2018 Young Tradition Touring Group includes 24 auditioned members ranging in age from 12 to 20. Though most Touring Group members are from throughout Vermont, the group also includes members from Massachusetts and the Adirondacks in New York State. There are 4 local Addison County teens currently playing in the group.
The evening will include 2 sets with an intermission. The first half will feature artist leaders and youth leaders with members of the Touring Group. The second half will feature the full Touring Group. The music is wonderful and appropriate for all ages.
