New Haven Community Library, 78 North Street, New Haven: Please join us on Thursday, March 22 at 7pm. when Dr. Jack Mayer will be a Vermont Humanities Council featured speaker at the New Haven Community Library. In a presentation entitled, "How Did Germany's Weimar Democracy Become the Third Reich?" Mayer will be discussing his recent book, "Before the Court of Heaven", a fictional look at Germany during the years between the World Wars during the brief Weimar democracy. Examining how cultural, social, historical, and economic causes created a perfect storm for fascism, Mayer will discuss how Germany "used and twisted values like patriotism, loyalty and honor to win over people who otherwise might have lived out their lives as ordinary, decent, humane people". We invite you to hear more about "Before the Court of Heaven", the creation of the actual story, the impact of Mayer's historical research on the narrative, and the implications for today.
This is a free and accessible program. Light refreshments will be served. For further information, please call Deborah Lundbech, Library Director, at 453-4015
