"What your teacher never told you – What Science really is".

From the presenter:
"In the first presentation of this series, we discussed the difference between Beliefs and Knowledge. In order to "know" a thing, we must believe it is true, and it must actually be true. Furthermore, we must understand why it is true.

According to traditional Philosophy, Beliefs can be justified as Knowledge by Foundationalism, Reliabilism, and Coherentism (Consistency, Cohesiveness, and Comprehensiveness). These concepts will be reviewed briefly as an introduction to the main topic of "What your teacher never told you – What Science really is".

First, there are many fields of endeavor which incorporate "Science" in their names, but which are not really Science. This confusion will be addressed and hopefully, dispelled.

Second, the Hypothetico-Deductive (H-D) method will be discussed, showing some of the naïve misconceptions which are commonly taught in textbooks and schools.

Third, we will address the most important aspect of Science, which is the justification of a candidate fact created by the H-D method. I will show that Science creates knowledge through the process of Falsification as well as the three traditional methods of Justification. This is the most important aspect of Science, and yet it is universally ignored at all levels, from elementary school through college. Finally, this presentation will lay the foundation for later presentations about the distinction between Science and Pseudoscience, and why it is Science which should be believed.

These presentations are intended for laypersons and do not require any knowledge of either Science or Philosophy beyond ordinary curiosity.

Class fee is $20, limited to 14 participants.
