Highgate and Swanton partner up with the Red Cross to Sound the Alarm and help save lives!
Home fires can be one of the most devastating events a family can face, killing seven people in this country every day. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms are an important step to making your home and family safer from fire. Research has demonstrated that with today's modern furnishings, fires can spread much more rapidly than in the past when more natural materials were used. Because of this, having a sufficient number of properly located smoke alarms is essential to maximize the amount of available escape time.
This April, the Highgate and Swanton Volunteer Fire Departments are teaming up with the American Red Cross to make homes in their communities a bit safer. On Saturday, April 7th, they will join forces and hold the first ever, in Franklin County, Sound the Alarm fire safety and smoke alarm installation event.
Both communities want to encourage residents to take steps to protect their family from home fires and sign up for this FREE program. If you, or someone you know needs free smoke alarms installed, please sign up online for the April 7th event. Links to Red Cross's on-line registration page can be found on the Town of Highgate (www.highgatevt.org) Swanton Village's (www.swanton.net) and the Town of Swanton's (www.townofswantonvermont.weebly.com) website, as well as on the Highgate Library and Community Center's website (www.hlccvt.org under the Sound the Alarm Tab).
Volunteers are also needed to help with this event. If you or your organization/business are interested in helping, we would love to hear from you! All volunteers will go through a quick (ARC) training the morning of April 7th. Each install team will consist of 3 individuals- a Safety Educator, Smoke Alarm Installer and Documenter. Volunteers should sign up online with the American Red Cross. The sites listed above will direct you to the volunteer registration form.
Nationwide, the Red Cross will Sound the Alarm through a series of smoke alarm installation and fire safety events in more than 100-high-risk communities. From April through mid-May, Red Cross volunteers and partners will install 100,000 free smoke alarms. These events are related to the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which since 2014 has helped save lives through smoke alarm installations and home fire safety education in thousands of communities.
Please join this important effort.
Together, we can Sound the Alarm about fire safety and help save lives. This event on April 7th is only available for residents in the Swanton and Highgate communities.
