The League of Women Voters Annual Spring Lecture & Lunch features veteran journalists John Christie and Naomi Schalit. The husband and wife duo will discuss the critical connection between journalism and democracy and provide an inside look into how investigative journalism is done.

Christie and Schalit founded the non-profit Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting (MCPIR) in 2009 because of concern about the decline of and need for investigative reporting. MCPIR gives citizens information on unreported problems in state and local government and public officials, which has resulted in significant changes to state law and policy.

Christie is a media executive whose 40-year career includes work in four states as writer, editor, general manager, and publisher for newspapers owned by Tribune Media, Dow Jones & Company, and The Seattle Times Company. In 2008, a series Christie edited, "For I was Hungry," about hunger in Maine, won a number of regional and national awards, including best editorial series from the national Society of Professional Journalists.

Schalit has written for magazines and newspapers around the country, worked as columnist for the Maine Times, and was a reporter and producer at Maine Public Radio. She won many awards for her radio reporting, including one from Public Radio News Directors, Inc. for expose of an historic state conservation deal gone bad.

The League invites you to a spirited discussion on journalistic objectivity, online news sources, and being a savvy news consumer. Tickets $5, includes buffet lunch.
