We invite you to join us on Thursday, March 15th at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol when Christiane Kokubo and Nate Shepard will share experiences from their year-long adventure in 2016 they call "From Home—Para Casa", meaning "From Home—To Home". This One World Library program is from 7:00 -8:30 pm and is sponsored by The Vermont Humanities Council. It is free, handicapped accessible and open to the public.
When planning their marriage, Christiane and Nate came up with a novel idea for their honeymoon: They would drive from Nate’s home in Starksboro, VT to Christiane’s home in São Paulo, Brazil, raise one dollar for each kilometer of the journey, and donate the proceeds to the Open Door Clinic (ODC) for the underserved in Addison County.
Kokubo and Shepard came to know the undocumented Latino population in Vermont through their work at ODC. More than 60% of ODC patients are Mexican and Guatemalan dairy farm workers and the couple heard their stories and made friendships with them.
The year-long trip began in 2016 with adventures through North, Central and South America. Their presentation will focus on how Kokubo and Shepard expanded their understanding of the cultures they experienced from Vermont to Brazil.
