Friends of Willoughby State Forest March 16. 2018

Do you enjoy learning about local history? Do you love Willoughby State Forest and the surrounding area? The Friends of Willoughby State Forest (WSF) invite you to a presentation on the local history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) including the Camp 55 in Willoughby State Forest. The event will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018, 7:00 PM at the Burke Mountain Clubhouse, 368 Route 114. There is no charge and the public is welcome.

Two presenters, both NEK natives, will offer a valuable look at the development and heritage of CCC Camp 55. William (Bo) Hall will share his experiences in the state forest from early childhood. During frequent visits to his family camp on Vail Pond, Mr. Hall played in the CCC camp area. As a young adult he leased the Foresters' Quarters at the site of the CCC camp for five years and has deep knowledge of the structures and their remains.

Luke O'Brien, Recreation Specialist in the St. Johnsbury office of the Vermont Department of Forest, Parks and Recreation, will present a talk and slide show on the history of CCC Camp 55. His presentation includes many photos of the original camp and offers a rich historical perspective.

The Friends of Willoughby State Forest plan to work towards the creation of an interpretive, accessible trail through the CCC camp, restoring and preserving a valued piece of our local history. For more information contact Jean Haigh, President of the Friends of WSF at jhaighvt@gmail.com.
