Prenatal Belly Dance & Yoga

Past event

Belly dance is created from movements as ancient as the undulations of the ocean from which we emerged, and as natural as the undulations of our bodies that bring life into the world. Your baby will enjoy rocking and swaying within the waters of your body as you mimic the various shapes of the moon with your hips. This time tested method, with origins traceable up to 5,000 years ago, was created as preparation and conditioning for conception and childbirth, and as an essential component to group birthing rituals.

Prenatal yoga and belly dance work in synergy to develop tone and awareness to the muscles used in childbirth. This mindful movement practice is ideal for preparing the pelvis and ligaments to open, breathing into areas of tension and relaxing into the natural processes of the body. Accessing these muscles also informs the process of re-strengthening the body and pelvis after birth, while safe and effective movements build needed strength and stamina for the amazing physical feat of childbirth ahead. Many women find ease from lower back pain or joint swelling with prenatal belly dance, as well as improved blood flow in extremities and support with posture.

Most of all, this is an occasion to celebrate the feminine transformations we are experiencing! And what better way to celebrate than by dancing with other women? When we experience joy, our babies feel joy. And when we dance, our babies dance within us!

Physical activity is highly recommended during pregnancy. However, if your doctor or midwife have recommended that you refrain from physical activity during your pregnancy, discuss this option with them prior to participation.
