I want to invite everyone to an event in Burlington creating digital maps in the Lake Chad Basin Region. Recent armed group attacks represent continued security risks facing civilians in this area and relief organizations have requested mapping assistance. And despite being halfway around the world, this weekend you can make a significant contribution from right here in Vermont. All you need is a web browser and some simple training.
In many crisis situations such as earthquakes, hurricanes, avalanches and health epidemics, having up-to-date digital maps can make a big difference to the success of disaster recovery efforts. Sadly many parts of the world are still poorly mapped, hampering relief when it's desperately needed.
Code for BTV, in conjunction with the UVM Humanitarian Mapping Club, is hosting a training event on National Open Data Day this Saturday, March 3 from 12-4pm at two locations: The Generator (40 Sears Lane in Burlington) and the UVM Aiken Lab, Room 101, Aiken Building, UVM. Both sites are wheelchair accessible. Note the UVM Lab is open 12-2:30, but the Generator location is open until 4pm or whenever people leave (so maybe later).
This is an easy opportunity to assist in crisis recoveries across the world. It only takes 30 minutes to learn how to help – no software needed, and no previous experience required. You can bring laptop or use a machine at the labs. Just RSVP at our MeetUp page: https://www.meetup.com/CodeForBTV/events/247134472/
