Free & open to the public.

The Vergennes American Legion Post #14 will host the American Legion District 1 Constitutional Speech Contest.

Whether it is Freedom of Speech, voting rights, the right to bear arms or many other rights protected by our government’s foundational document, the U.S. Constitution is being challenged more than ever. This speech contest provides high school students an opportunity to research and articulate the duties and obligations of citizens to the United States government. It also provides an opportunity for monetary award.

Each student is sponsored by a Vermont American Legion post. The winner of this contest will go to the Vermont Department of the American Legion final contest, Sat. Mar. 10. The winner of that contest goes to a national contest with a potential to win $18,000 and compete with students representing every state, and the American Legions in Puerto Rico, Mexico and France.

Saturday, there will be 3 contestants. For the Prepared Topic, they will each speak 8-10 min. without notes, podium or microphone. For the Assigned Topic (one of 4 amendments is selected by a draw from the hat), the students will speak 3-5 min.

Free and open to the public. Being held on the lower level of the Vergennes American Legion.
