Walk in the Woods: Wildlife Benefits of a Timber Harvest

Past event
Feb 24, 2018, 9 AM to 12 PM

● Date: Saturday, February 24th
● Time: 9AM-12PM
● Location: 311 Mooney Road, Wallingford, VT

Would you like to learn about actions your neighbors are taking to manage their land with birds and wildlife in mind? Dan and Pat Stone would like to invite you to walk their woods and see what an active timber harvest looks like and how it will benefit bird and wildlife habitat.

The Stones have been working with the Woods, Wildlife and Warblers program professionals on their 132 acre Tree Farm, to conduct a timber harvest that will benefit bird and wildlife habitat. An interesting part of this project is that the trees harvested will be part of the Habitat for Heat Program, and will be sent to the Vermont Wood Pellet Company in nearby Clarendon, Vermont. The harvested wood will then be processed into pellets which will be sent to a local assisted-living facility that uses pellets to heat their facility. The Habitat for Heat Program is a partnership between the Vermont Woodlands Association/Tree Farm Program, American Forest Foundation and Audubon Vermont, who are also partners in the Woods, Wildlife and Warblers program. The Stones woodlands are a certified Tree Farm, and their property is conserved with the Vermont Land Trust.

Their foresters, Kathy Beland and Frank Hudson, will lead the tour and answer any questions. Join them to learn how you can care for your woodland and the critters that call it home. Invite your forester as well! This event is eligible for 3.0 category 1 CFE credits from the Society of American Foresters upon sign in.

Registration is required. RSVP Online at vtwoodsandwildlife.org/events, or contact Silvia by Friday 2/23 at info@vtwoodsandwildlife.org or (802) 747-7900 to register. This is an all-weather event, so please dress accordingly and be prepared for walking on uneven terrain. We look forward to seeing you and your forester at this upcoming event, sponsored by Woods, Wildlife, and Warblers!
