Seven Last Words of Christ by Haydn to take place during Palm Sunday Worship service on 3/25 at 10AM at Charlotte Congregational Church. Admission is free and all are invited to attend. Here's the details:

Since 1991, a small group of Vermont musicians has carried on a tradition of offering music commemorating Jesus’ final hours. Joseph Haydn’s hour-long work sets each of the traditional last saying of Jesus to music. Haydn composed the work in 1785, and its initial popularity as a string quartet led him to write subsequent versions for piano, chorus and orchestra. In 1990 the Juilliard String Quarter and four vocal soloists from the Metropolitan Opera recorded a pared down version for just eight performers.

After hearing it, West Glover violinist Bert Francke decided to take Juilliard version and offer it to area churches on Good Friday. 2018 marks the 28th year Vermont audiences have been treated to this powerful and tender work. Moments of great anguish, beauty, grief, and love emerge through seven slow movements, framed by an introduction and a final terrible movement titled “The Earthquake.”

This year The Octet will offer two performances of Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ, on Sunday March 25th , at 10 am at the Charlotte Congregational Church, and on Friday, March 30th at 7 pm, at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth in Hanover New Hampshire.

The Octet consists of singers: Martha Peck, Cara Hill, Paul Bishop and Jose Schmidt, and string quartet: Bert Francke, Drusilla Macy, Elizabeth Stedina and Melissa Perley.
