Join Citizen's Forum of Vermont on Sunday, February 25th, 4pm at the Stowe Free Library for:
Ending the Cycle of Incarceration: Vermont's Movement for Criminal Justice Reform:
Facts:
• Vermont incarcerates 50% more people than it did as recently as the late 1990s
• Vermont imprisons black men at a higher rate than any other state
• We send 250 people to out of state prisons at a cost of $6 million
• 91% of Americans believe the criminal justice system needs fixing
Join us in an in-depth conversation about mass incarceration and current criminal justice reform campaigns in Vermont. Presenters from the ACLU-VT and Vermonters for Criminal Justice Reform will discuss how mass incarceration affects the fabric of our communities, and why it is important to invest in alternative programs that respond holistically to co-occurring and systemic issues that perpetuate mass incarceration. Presenters will provide participants with concrete actions and opportunities to get involved with the movement to end mass incarceration in VT.
We will also discuss the Governor's new privately operated prison proposal and its impact on our state.
