Free Community Poetry Writing Workshop

Past event
Feb 27, 2018, 6:30 to 8 PM

The Marlboro Library Board and the Marlboro Elementary School will be hosting the second event in the Brown Girl Dreaming initiative on Tuesday evening, February 27 from 6:30-8, in the Jr. High Room at MES.

This evening, led by Carol Berner, will be an informal workshop of poetry writing and conversation for all ages, inspired by Brown Girl Dreaming. We will draft poems drawing on our own memories of things like food, family and special childhood places. Participants will be invited, but not required, to share and respond to each other’s writing. Please bring an open mind, sense of humor, and curiosity to learn with and from each other. It is not necessary to have read the book, and no other preparation or experience is required.

Carol Berner is a Marlboro resident who has enjoyed working with students and faculty at MES for over ten years, coordinating Hogback Day; writing poetry with children; and facilitating faculty dialogue. She teaches at Smith College in the Department of Education and Child Study, and is Regional Coordinator for River of Words, a place-based education program integrating environmental science, poetry, and the arts.

These events are part of a Vermont Council on the Humanities Grant from which we received 75 copies of Jacqueline Woodson's award winning memoir, Brown Girl Dreaming for the Community to read . All children in grades 4-8 will be receiving their own copy of the book and there are plenty of copies available for the community to borrow through the school or from the Wee Libraries scattered around town.

Refreshments will be served! For more information and to RSVP (not necessary but it would be nice to know how many people are planning to come) contact andrahorton@gmail.com or talk to Rochelle Garfinkle in the MES library.
