First three classes for 2018 at the VT Genealogy Library

Beginning Genealogy February 10 by Sheila Morris

In this introduction to genealogy Sheila Morris will discuss records, techniques and best practices for conducting sound research. This talk is aimed at beginners and at those who have already started but are still relatively inexperienced. Sheila will also cover how to organize the records and images that result from your research efforts. Bring as much information as you can about your grandparents; births, marriages, deaths and where they lived. After the talk our volunteers can help you get started using our many resources.

Introduction to DNA Testing February 17, 2018 by Ed McGuire

Ed McGuire will discuss the three types of tests for "Genetic Genealogy", test limitations, the companies who offer them and the range of costs involved. Ed will also cover the kinds of genealogical questions where DNA testing can help, privacy issues and more. Using real-life examples and actual results this talk will provide most with enough understanding to decide if a DNA test will advance their personal research. An open-ended Q&A session will follow and a detailed handout will be given with links to additional resources.

Our Library’s Hidden Gems February 24, 2018 by our staff

The VT Genealogy Library has over 4500 books, journals, microfilm, microfiche and subscriptions to the most important online genealogy databases. With so many resources it might be easy to miss the one that might hold the key to solving one of your family mysteries. In this talk a panel of researchers will introduce you to some of our most important yet overlooked tools. Whether your interests take you to early New England, upstate New York, Quebec or Vermont, our panel will discuss the resources that they turn to when all else fails.

Classes at the Vermont Genealogy Library are $10.00 and run from 10:30 to noon. We are open for research Tuesdays 3 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 to 4.The library is located on Hegeman Ave, Fort Ethan Allen, Colchester.
