Relocalizing Vermont Thursday on Goddard College Community Radio - how Vermont solar experts think the newly announced federal tariffs on imported solar panels will affect the industry here, and a look at new food safety rules and their effects on small farmers.
9:00 - 10:00 am
Solar is the fastest-growing source of new energy production in the world, with costs coming down dramatically. On Monday, the Trump administration announced a 30% tariff on imported solar electric panels. The Solar Energy Industries Association has responded that "solar industry is too strong not to emerge from this, but the near-term impacts are unfortunate and avoidable.” How will the tariffs affect Vermont’s increasing use of solar electricity? We’ll hear from Kevin McCollister of co-operatively owned Catamount Solar for the perspective of a local installer, and from Robert Dostis of Green Mountain Power.

The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 is aimed at increasing the safety of the U.S. food system. Is it too burdensome on small producers, or does it have unexpected benefits? Maybe both? We’ll hear different perspectives from Washington County farmer and soup producer Joe Buley of Joe’s Kitchen at Screamin’ Ridge Farm and Vern Grubinger vegetable and berry specialist at UVM extension.
