The Vermont Italian Cultural Association is sponsoring a four-session memoir writing class for Italian Americans focused on embracing Italy and Italian culture. The class will be held from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on February 1,8,22 and March 1 (no class on Feb. 15) at the Burlington Police Dept. Conference room, 1 North Ave. Parking is available next to the police station. A $40 fee includes all four sessions.
Instructor Kristin D’Agostino is a certified teacher and published journalist who has been teaching writing to adults for seven years. At 23 she traveled to Italy for the first time to meet her southern Italian family who run a textile factory. Having fallen in love with the culture, years later she self-published a book of her Italian grandmother’s family memoirs. Now she is dedicated to helping others preserve their own family stories.
We will read a mix of writers and poets who have written about Italy including Frances Mayes, Billy Collins, and Elena Ferrante. Weekly writing prompts on travel, family, food and Italian culture will inspire us to write our own memoir stories which we will share with each other in an effort to gather positive feedback. Kristin will provide handouts, writing prompts, and books. Students should bring a three-ring binder, a notebook, and a pen to class. Stories we write may be shared in an end-of-term open mic, complete with Italian refreshments.
Sign up now as space is limited. Reservations must be made by January 25th. To reserve your space call Barbara Guiduli at 862-4200 and send your check in the amount of $40 made out to VICA, P. O. Box 4054, Burlington VT 05406-4054
