Rob Schwimmer: Theremin, Piano, Haken Continuum at UVM

Do you know about the theremin? The only instrument you play without physical contact?

The critic Harold C. Schonberg described the sound of the theremin as "(a) cello lost in a dense fog, crying because it does not know how to get home.” "Spooky," "mysterious," and "otherworldly" are some of the words used to describe its sound, which you have heard in compositions as diverse as the Beach Boys “Good Vibrations” and Bernard Hermann’s “Scene d’Amour” from Vertigo.

Invented by Soviet Physicist Lev Sergeyevich Termen (known in the West as Léon Theremin) in 1920, it is notoriously difficult to master and to compose for. One of the contemporary masters of the instrument is Rob Schwimmer, formerly of the band Polygraph Lounge, who will perform his program entitled “Heart of Hearing” on the UVM Lane Series on Friday, January 26, at 7:30 pm followed by a post-concert discussion.

But wait, there’s more.

Mr. Schwimmer is also a critically acclaimed jazz pianist whose playing exudes “virtuosity, magic, and humor” (The New York Times). AND he’s a master of an amazing new electronic instrument called the Haken Continuum, which raises electronic expression into the realm of the immediacy and depth of what has previously been the domain of only acoustic instruments.

This is a very rare occasion: a triple recital of awesome electronics and cool jazz!
