Join us on February 5th at the Study Hall (209 College St., 3rd Floor, Burlington) from 5:30 - 8:30 pm for "An Introduction to Abenaki Horticulture and Forest Gardening."
We're excited to host the honorable Dr. Fred Wiseman in this follow-up to the Decolonizing VT Food Systems workshop in December.
The evening workshop will give a short but comprehensive introduction to ancient Abenaki (and related Wabanaki) food systems. Topics covered will include the politics, archaeology, science and spirituality of the "Seven Sisters" Indigenous Wabanaki crops, and the new discoveries and revival of Indigenous Vermont sustainable herbaceous-crop agro-engineering, and agro-forestry using native perennials and woody species. Also included will be a discussion of Abenaki agricultural ceremony, cuisine and seed-saving. The lecture will be supplemented by slides, video presentations, demonstrations and exhibits of local crops, followed b a Q & A session.
Samples of rare Indigenous crop seeds will be available to participants. There may even be a chance to purchase signed copies of "The Seven Sisters: The Ancient Seeds and Food Systems of the Wabanaki People," the new book on Wabanaki crops and agriculture by Dr. Fred Wiseman, which is slated for publishing in mid January 2018.
This event is by donation (we suggest $10) and proceeds will support the ongoing work of Dr. Wiseman and the Seeds of Renewal Project.
