Dreaming: A Speak Chorus--Tuesday, January 30, 2018

The Prosper Valley School and ArtisTree Community Arts Center are proud to present “Dreaming: A Speak Chorus” at ArtisTree’s Grange Theatre in South Pomfret on Tuesday, January 30 at 6:30pm.

This event is part of the 2017 Vermont Reads program.  Each year the Vermont Humanities Council invites Vermonters across the state to read the same book and participate in a wide variety of community activities related to its themes. The Vermont Reads book for 2017 was Jacqueline Woodson’s memoir Brown Girl Dreaming.

While “Dreaming: A Speak Chorus” is based on Woodson's award-winning prose poem describing her childhood as an African American in the south and in Brooklyn during the late 1960s and early 1970s, “Dreaming” weaves in the themes of family, place, and civil rights as seen through the eyes of young adults in Bridgewater and Pomfret. In “Dreaming,” The Prosper Valley School fifth and sixth graders respond to Woodson’s work in their own distinctive voices. The program will also featured selected readings from Brown Girl Dreaming and occasional music by Michael Zoldos.
On display at “Dreaming” will be a memory quilt created by members of the community. The public is invited to create squares for this quilt in response to Woodson’s book at a Memory Quilt Workshop at ArtisTree on Thursday, January 18 at 6pm. Copies of Woodson’s book are available at the Abbott Memorial Library. Both the workshop and “Dreaming” are offered free of cost.
