Gun Laws/Restrictions Dialogue

Jericho United Methodist Church is hosting a time of dialogue on Thursday, January 11th, at 6:30 p.m., about gun laws/restrictions. We know that it is a conversation that many have had and are having across the country and in our community. But you, like many of us, may be sick and tired of those conversations because they seem not to go anywhere: one side of the political spectrum yells out one thing, and the other side attacks back, and the divisions grow wider, and what's the point?

What will be unique about our dialogue, with much prayer, is that we will invite the community to use a traditional Methodist tool called "holy conferencing." Holy conferencing is a type of dialoguing that specifically calls God to guide us, to help us respect one another, listen to one another, and come to understand one another in the spirit of peace and love. Holy conferencing is not intended to lead to a conclusion, per se, but instead to see, as the Quakers say, "that which is God" in one another. So we will not be forcing any ideas upon anyone, though the dialogue will at points be challenging. What we hope to do is lay a foundation, to teach and help us learn how to respectfully dialogue with our community about hot-button topics moving forward, and in so doing further the peace of God's Kingdom in a world where peace seems nearly impossible.

We hope you'll join us. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us at 899-4288 or e-mail Pastor John at jlucy.wilde@gmail.com.
