Native Tree Identification: Onsite Mapping Effort

Past event

I had five responses to my recent post on Vermont native tree identification activities... Anyway. I will spend 1-2 hours this Saturday morning, starting at 10:30, at my home at 23 Cilley Hill Road mapping our small, fairly diverse riverside tree stand -- which is mostly by the bridge & waterfall area but there are also some distinctly different species a bit further down the river (hawthorne and box elder). Please consider joining us at any time during this two hours. There's plenty of parking area at the top of the driveway but if not there's more down the drive -- by the barn or house. If it gets cold, we can go inside for a tea break.

I have a fairly good grasp of about 70% of the trees here... Anyway. If our experts Gerald or Evergreen can't make it, we can provide our mappings to them and maybe they could stop by when they drive by one day and take a look. Gerald did recommend an application called GeoSetter that could help with mapping and, though I've downloaded this, I've not tested it yet. (Perhaps we could design a small indelible metal tag that we could attach to the base of the trees with the IDs for future reference...)

It would be helpful to have a list of all of the possible native trees that we might find and their prevalence in our area. Perhaps our State Forester, Ethan Tapper (Essex) could provide this to us at some point or even join our next event.

Many thanks!

Tobias
