VERDI "DEFIANT REQUIEM" FREE SCREENING OF DOCUMENTARY FILM DECEMBER 30TH, 3PM, AT CAMBRIDGE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
The Battenkill Chorale in collaboration with Cambridge United Presbyterian Church will present a free screening of the "Defiant Requiem," a 90-minute documentary film based on Verdi Requiem performances by Jewish prisoners at Terezin concentration camp in 1944, on Saturday, December 30th, 3pm, at Cambridge United Presbyterian Church, 81 East Main Street, Cambridge (corner of Rte 22 and Main Street.) This award-winning documentary tells the remarkable story of how 150 prisoners learned Verdi’s Requiem by rote and presented sixteen performances at Terezin before being deported to Auschwitz, where many were killed. The “Defiant Requiem” also chronicles how Verdi’s Requiem was brought back to Terezin six decades later and performed with the addition of historical photos and interviews with Terezin survivors.
In 2011, Battenkill Chorale Artistic Director Janet McGhee took 50 singers to Terezin, where they sang and honored those who so courageously fought Nazi oppression thru music. On January 20 and 21, 2018, both at 3pm, the 110-voice Battenkill Chorale will present the Verdi Requiem with 48-piece orchestra and soloists Sylvia Stoner, Sahoko Sato Timpone, Jorge Pita Carreras, and Keith Kibler at Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center in Saratoga Springs, NY. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased after January 1st by calling (518) 692-7458 or emailing battenkilltickets@gmail.com.
