Talk About Books will be discussing "Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead at our next meeting on January 27th at 6:30 at Guilford Free Library.

Underground Railroad is the sixth novel by American author Colson Whitehead. This widely acclaimed work won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and a 2016 National Book Award.

Underground Railroad is an alternate history novel which tells the story of Cora and Caesar, two slaves in the southeastern United States during the 1800s. Together they make a bid for freedom from their Georgia plantations by following the "Underground Railroad", which in the novel is an actual subway as opposed to a series of safe houses and secret routes.

Alternate history or alternative history sometimes abbreviated as AH, is a genre of fiction consisting of stories in which one or more historical events occur differently. These stories usually contain "what if" scenarios at crucial points in history and present outcomes other than those in the historical record.

Copies will be available at the library. Call us at 257-4603 or reserve yours from the online catalog on the library website, https://www.guilfordfreelibraryvt.org.

All are welcome to join in the discussion. Always lively, sometimes surprising!
