I will be presenting a three-session seminar on the history of American independent film at the home of Barbara Weedon, in Adamant, with the first session on Saturday, January 6 from 2:30 to 5:00. As long as “Hollywood” has existed, there has also been a rich vein of independent films made by uncompromising and often brilliant filmmakers unconcerned with financial rewards. The first session will cover such little-known pioneers of the era 1920-70 as Oscar Micheaux, Sidney Meyers, Maya Deren, Morris Engel, Ruth Orkin, and Leo Hurwitz. The “indie explosion” of the early 80s, that featured the work of Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, and John Sayles, will be the focus of the second session, while the third will cover from the 90s to the present day. We'll see many film cips with plenty of time for discussion. The remaining sessions will be on Saturday, February 3 and Saturday, March 3. The cost will be $40 per session or $100 for all three sessions. For more information, please contact Rick at 454-7103 or through email at this address.
