The Problem of Slavery in Early Vermont
Vermont History Museum, 109 State Street, Montpelier
Vermonters have always been proud that their state was the first to outlaw slavery in its constitution—but is that what really happened? Professor Harvey Amani Whitfield of the University of Vermont will present the results of his research into primary sources as he uncovers the true history of slavery in Vermont. Professor Whitfield's new book on the topic, The Problem of Slavery in Early Vermont, 1777-1810, will be published by the Vermont Historical Society in February 2014.
