Grow Your Own will host a workshop on basic soil science for home and community gardeners on Saturday, January 13, at the Center for an Agricultural Economy (CAE) in Hardwick from 11:30 to 1:30. Peggy Newfield of Newfield Herb Farm will explain the basics in this hands-on workshop. She will share some ideas for boosting soils and garden planning. GYO workshops always include a shared meal, and for this workshop all participants will enjoy hot homemade chicken broth and a salad with sunflower sprouts cut by each participant. Each participant will go home with a chicken back, a recipe to make their own broth, sunflower seeds and directions to grow their own sprouts on a winter windowsill. Registration is required by January 10. To register call the Hardwick Area Food Pantry (HAFP) at 472-5940 or e-mail ruby.dalebrown@gmail.com. Grow Your Own is a project of HAFP, CAE, and NEK Kids on the move. All workshops are free of charge. Child care and transportation can be provided if arranged in advance. The Mission of Grow Your Own is to increase food independence, better health and wellbeing through shared knowledge and experience.
