Preview of Dec. 11 Council Meeting

Past event
Dec 11, 2017, 7 to 9:30 PM

Dear Neighbors,

This coming Monday, the City Council will convene its first of two meetings for the month of December.

We will begin our evening at 6pm with an update from the administration on negotiations on the UVM-City agreement. We will also get an update on the purchase agreement on the sale of Burlington Telecom with Schurz Communications. Because these items are both contract negotiations, they are expected to be done in executive session.

Following a brief Local Control Commission meeting and a Council meeting with the Mayor presiding, we will move on to our deliberative agenda.

We will begin our agenda by voting on two commission appointments. We will then have a communication from the Mayor on the Letter of Intent on the sale of BT with Schurz Communications. Our next item is a presentation from the Department of Public Works (DPW) on a Public Engagement Plan (PEP). This plan is to guide our engagement efforts and offer residents, representatives and other stakeholders meaningful and predictable ways to communicate with DPW, give feedback or become informed about DPW initiated projects.

The next item is a resolution on the sale of .38 acres of land at 70 Pearl Street. This is the small parking lot next to the old Bove’s restaurant. The Boves came to the City over a year ago with a plan to develop their property. The plan will include 15 net new housing dwellings, 76 hotel rooms, 95 parking spaces and space for a restaurant at street level. Presently the parking lot is utilized 17% of the time, netting the City after expenses about $13,000 a year. The Boves will pay $500,000 for the lot. The cash flow from property tax revenue to the City only (not including education) is projected to be under $100,000 a year. this does not include the projected rooms and meals tax which is more a moving figure at this time.

Our last agenda item is the first reading of several quality of life ordinances in the downtown core. These include changes to come civil and criminal offenses.

As with all Council meetings, please keep in mind that you are always welcome to come and speak to the Council on any subject you wish during our public forum which begins at 7:30pm.

You may access the Council agenda at http://www.boarddocs.com/vt/burlingtonvt/Board.nsf/Public Please note that all Council meetings are televised live on BT Channel 317 and streamed live to your computer or phone.

As always, I welcome your questions and concerns. If you have any questions on the Burlington Telecom LOI (which you can access at https://www.burlingtontelecom.com/settlement/), I would welcome your questions and comments.

Please be in touch over the weekend and on Monday.

My best,
Karen
