Baroque in Bolivia? Fire Burning in Snow: Concerts In Montpelier Dec. 16 and 17: The Onion River Chorus celebrates a warm Christmas with 16th, 17th, and 18th century music from Mexico and Bolivia. The musical language of Latin America at this time sounds a bit like music from Spain, but there's something different going on. It's a musical language that reflects composers born in Spain, but who reached their full maturity while in Latin America.

For this program we will travel 2,600 miles to Mexico City, and 4,500 miles to Sucre, Bolivia for music that is all but unknown in the United States, but speaks a language that we can all move to.

Loring’s comments: This music is rhythmic, beautiful and amazing. We are singing in Nahuatl (Aztec language), Quechua (language of the Incas), Latin, and, oh yes, Spanish. English not so much. The vision of “fire burning in snow” appears in several of the songs—it refers to lava in the Andes, streaming down the snow in December.

The concerts will be on Saturday December 16 and Sunday December 17 in Montpelier.

Saturday December 16, 7:30 PM, Unitarian Church, Montpelier.

Sunday December 17, 4:00 PM, also at Unitarian Church, Montpelier.
