Classic Film Night with Rick Winston and Tom Blachly
Wednesday, January 8th at 7PM at Jaquith Public Library.
This month's 1955 film was directed by Charles Laughton. It stars Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Peter Graves, James Gleason, and Lillian Gish. A fake preacher (Mitchum) marries a gullible widow (Winters) whose young children are reluctant to tell him where their real father (Graves) hid $10,000 he'd stolen from a robbery. Haunting and chilling, with a terrific screenplay by James Agee and memorably expressionistic cinematography, this is the only film ever directed by famed British actor Laughton. A box-office flop at the time, the film has since become a classic. As the late Roger Ebert said of it: "It is one of the most frightening of movies, with one of the most unforgettable of villains, and on both of these scores it holds up…. well after four decades." Our viewing experience will be greatly enriched by Rick’s presentation of each film followed by a lively discussion after the viewing.
Why am I keeping you in suspense about the title?
