Plan to attend our next Open House on Sunday, January 5, 2014, from 1 to 4 p.m. featuring painters Kristan Doolan and Pat Murphy, photographer Wayne Tarr, and jeweler Cindy Weed, each of whom will display, present, and discuss their work at AIR, and we’ll all ask questions and applaud as appropriate! Artist Talks will begin at approximately 2 pm. As always, refreshments, good conversation, the monthly raffle, and profound insights into the creative process complete the afternoon’s agenda.
Kristan Doolan: "I have not been painting much this year, as the farm and teenage children have been keeping me quite busy. I did recently pull out the paintbrushes to decorate some sap buckets to sell as a fundraiser for my daughter's pony club. The last bucket is pictured and will donated for the benefit AIR raffle at the opening. I hope to see you there."
Patrick Murphy: “My newest work starts out from life. I have been working on a series of drawings and paintings of an ash tree in my yard. Drawing and painting something over and over has allowed me to memorize the scene which ultimately has altered the work. Some of the works are small while a few are very large. One version of the ash tree is a 4’x 6’ oil. The painting is a series of 8”x11” canvas boards all glued together on a piece of thin plywood forming some strange looking mosaic. Working from life gives the art work vitality. “
Wayne Tarr: “I still haven't taken my best image, yet. After thirty-five plus years in this business, I consider myself a student of photography. There are so many aspects of photography that apply to what I do, and want to do, that I continue my study of photography by attending workshops, seminars, conventions each year. I also participate in annual state, regional, and national print competitions to hone my craft. More recently, I’m photographing more dancers to help promote the beautiful art of dance by creating fine art images to use in galleries and competitions. “
Cindy Weed has been making wooden jewelry and hair barrettes for 25 years. Weed strives to bring the inherent natural beauty of native and exotic hardwoods alive in each piece she fabricates. She designs all of her own pieces and especially enjoys using recycled woods such as woodworkers’ cast offs and pieces. She accents her creations with semi-precious stones, sterling silver, copper, brass and gold-filled embellishments. Her work is available at fine gift shops, galleries and area craft shows. In 1992 Weed’s work was featured in Fine Woodworking’s Design Book #6. “Right now I am having a lot of fun experimenting with colowood, a dyed wood product made at Rutland Plywood,” Weed noted. “Vibrant colors add a whole new dimension to my work.”
