Relocalizing VT Thursday: New Trains; Too-Low Taxes

Past event
Nov 30, 2017, 9 to 10:30 AM

Coming up Thursday on Goddard College Community Radio - an entrepreneur investing in passenger rail in Vermont, and insight into tax initiatives in D.C. and Montpelier.

9:00 - 10:00 am
David Blittersdorf of AllEarth Renewables in Williston has ponied up $5 million to buy passenger rail cars for commuter rail service in Vermont that doesn’t yet exist. Or at least hasn’t existed for many decades. He’ll share his vision of how passenger rail fits into a future transportation pattern emphasizing trains and pedestrians, and what the opportunities for rail in Vermont are now.

Stephanie Yu from the Public Assets Institute will explain what’s going on in tax discussions in Washington, D.C. and in the upcoming session in Montpelier. We’ll talk about why current discussions are so divergent from the popular arguments of Bernie Sanders and others to move the country to a Scandinavian-like system where more services are treated as public goods.
