Future of Burlington Telecom

As a supporter of Keep BT Local's bid to buy Burlington Telecom and keep this important public asset in the control of our community, I wanted to pass along this overview of the recent improvements to the KBTL bid, and hope that you'll contact your city councilor to vote in favor of keeping Burlington Telecom from being sold off to an outside company. The only way that we taxpayers will be repaid our $17 million (plus the money we put up beforehand to get BT off the ground) is through the cooperative's bid, which will return millions more than that $17 million to subscribers and taxpayers over decades. Selling off BT to an out-of-state company will net the city less than $5 million, which is a far cry from $17 million. By keeping Burlington Telecom local, we could stand to be repaid up to $26 million in ten years, and many more in the decades ahead. Besides, having control over this core economic and civic infrastructure will keep Burlington from falling prey to the whims of the market, of a distant owner, and ensure that all residents and businesses have equal access to high-speed broadband.

Please come to City Hall Monday, November 27th. The Council is having a work session on the final bidders starting at 5:30PM, but the full council meeting will take place at 7 PM with a public comment session. Please come and support the KBTL bid.
